Local Food and Farming Issues

Young Farmers Connect supports The Farm Byron Bay Planning Proposal which is now on public exhibition.

We recognise that The Farm Byron Bay represents an important and dynamic ecosystem of enterprises that currently enables a significant number of young farmers to learn, grow and operate their agricultural business on site. Coupled with local supply directly to the restaurant on site the opportunity offered to new and young farmers is unique in the Northern Rivers to explore small scale farming sustainability, have supported access to a local market and have access to affordable farmland.

Young Farmers Connect acknowledges that The Farm Byron Bay serves as great platform for education and we look forward to working with them further to develop more pathways into small scale farming.

We encourage all local residence to support the Planning Proposal by writing a letter of support to council@byron.nsw.gov.au and to get in touch directly at community@thefarm.com.au for more information on how you can support.

The North Coast Local Land Services draft Local Strategic Plan is currently on display and sets out how the organisations aims to focus efforts and resources over the next five years to ensure our:

  • landscapes are healthy and productive

  • primary industries are sustainable

  • communities are engaged and prepared for risk and change.

Now is your chance to Have Your Say - use the online webform to help shape a plan to manage North Coast landscapes and create thriving, resilient places.

Let Local Land Services know that we need support and services to help new and young farmers with the transition to take on the management and stewardship of our regions essential and rich farmlands. We need programs that support training and pathways into the industry. We need the Small Scale Farming sector recognised for its essential contribution to preserving local ecologies, providing employment, food security and local food economy
