Small Farms Count Field Day Project
more events coming to your region
We’re gearing up to run a bunch of field days and workshops across five new regions. Get in touch if you’d like to be involved!
In late 2024, YFC was successfully awarded a Small Grant from the National Heritage Trust to facilitate a nationwide project over two years that will leverage the success of YFC field days and peer networks. The primary goal of this project is to continue the legacy of YFC field days to increase knowledge, skills and implementation of best practice land management in five regions. Spread across five states, the chosen regions are currently The Hills District (QLD), South Canberra (ACT), Richmond Valley (Coastal NSW), Whittlesea (Wallan VIC) and Onkaparinga (SA).
The project
Ten context specific learning and training activities will be delivered across these regions. The events contribute to the Small Grant outcomes by measuring and building farm-scale natural capital and improving farm productivity. Delivering 1,500 hours of on-farm learning will be supported by the development of 10 case studies demonstrating practice change and improved natural resource management and productivity on farms. These are expressed through two outcomes:
Outcome 1: Farmers, land holders and community groups have increased knowledge and skills in implementing best practice, locally applicable, climate-smart, sustainable agriculture approaches, including practices that conserve natural capital and biodiversity.
Outcome 2: There is an increase in the number of farmers, land holders and/or communities that have adopted climate-smart, sustainable agriculture practices.
Delivered across 2025-26, these activities will support the grant objectives by seeking to increase the number of farmers and landowners adopting climate-smart, sustainable agriculture practices. Ways to embrace First Nations perspectives through two-way knowledge sharing will also be explored. The key learning and training activities for this project are:
Five full-day field days that will combine a farm tour and workshop across five regional contexts
Two-way Knowledge Sharing Research Report
Two-way Knowledge Sharing Workshop
The events
Partnering with local organisations, each field day will include a tour of a local small-scale farm and a workshop relating to climate-smart, sustainable agriculture practices. Our first field day was held at Blue Dog Farm on Thursday 31st July. Partnering with Food and Agribusiness Network (FAN), this featured a full-day regenerative agriculture workshop by Graeme Sait of Nutri-tech Solutions.
Our second field day will be in South Canberra in September/October this year.
Two-way Knowledge Sharing
This project will also develop a Two-way Knowledge Sharing Research Report and Workshop. This aims to explore best practices associated with working with First Nations peoples in land management, stewardship and sustainable agriculture. This report is currently underway, with the workshop coming in 2026.
